What Do Those Photoshoot Credits Mean?

So I've been asked about what a Fashion Stylist or an Assistant is. What are their roles and responsibilities? How do you assign those credits? Here is a comprehensive list of each role in a photoshoot.


Creative Director: Oversees the entire shoot to ensure the concept and vision are cohesive and aligned with their vision, the brand or the project's goal. They will do the concept development, and mood board creation, supervise the shoot and make any final decisions for the creative elements


Art Director: directs the artistic direction of the shoot to ensure all the visual elements align with the overall concept.

Producer: Handles the logistics of the shoot and makes sure everything runs smoothly and on schedule. They manage the budget, secure locations and coordinate between team members to make sure the shoot is on track.


Fashion Stylist: Currates the clothing and has connections with designers and stores to locate the perfect clothes for the mood of the shoot. They style the model and make adjustments during the shoot.


Wardrobe Assistant: Assists the lead stylists with the clothing and dressing of the model. They prep the outfits and make sure the items are taken care of.


Lighting Technician: sets up the lights and adjusts them to create the desired mood and highlight the subject.


Photographer: Captures the photograph and works with the creative to see the vision through. They bring their expertise with lighting, lens, angles and composition. They are responsible for directing the model and often are involved in the editing process and sometimes they are not.


Photo Assistant: Assist the photographer in any way. Can help with moving & setting up lights, bringing lenses to the photographer and any other technical aspects.


Hair Stylist: styles the models' hair that compliments the desired creative direction and complements the overall look and feel of the shoot. During the shoot, the hair stylist may jump in to adjust the hair to make it easier in post-processing.


Makeup Artist: Uses makeup to enhance the model or alter their look according to the shoot's theme. They apply makeup and make adjustments during the shoot.


Model: often a chosen person with the desired look for the brand, campaign or concept, models and uses their skills in posing and facial expressions to make the vision come to life. They follow the direction of the photographer and creative director to understand the character to be played for the concept.


Model Scout/Casting Director: finds the talent that best fits the shoot requirements. They review portfolios, conduct casting calls and make final decisions and model selections.


Post-processing team: is responsible for editing the photo in the desired editing software.


Gopher: runs around and gets coffee for people and assists in any way needed.


Digitech or Digital Technician: is responsible for managing the digital files. Making sure the images are backed up, and organized and making preliminary edits. They ensure that the tethering and capturing of images are working and quality is there and will alert the photographer of any issues.


Designer: designs the clothes and provides a certain collection for the shoot based on the mood board.


Set Designer/Prop Stylist: Can be the same person or two people. The set designer designs the set and builds sets for the shoot that complement the mood of the shoot. The prop stylist sources props and supports the prop direction and props used during the shoot.
